Department of Behavioral Health and Development Disabilities
The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) serves people of all ages who have mental retardation or related developmental disabilities; alcohol or other drug addictions; the most severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder, or children and teens with severe emotional disturbance.

The main office for DBHDD is located in downtown Atlanta.
The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) has regional offices throughout the state, including seven regional hospitals.

Central State Hospital-Milledgeville

Central State Hospital (CSH), Georgia’s first public psychiatric hospital, was founded in 1842 to provide a safe and humane environment for Georgians with mental illness and developmental disabilities. Located in Milledgeville, the CSH complex currently encompasses about 1,750 acres.

East Central Regional State Hospital-Augusta

The East Central Regional Hospital/Augusta, serves consumers with disabilities including: mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse.

Georgia Regional Hospital-Atlanta

Located on 174 Acres in DeKalb County, Georgia Regional Hospital/Atlanta operates 366 licensed, accredited inpatient beds in five major program areas: Adult Mental Health, Adolescent Mental Health, Child Mental Health, Forensic Services, and Developmental Disabilities. In addition, GRH/Atlanta also offers inpatient and outpatient Dental Services and an Outpatient Forensic Evaluation Program for juveniles and adults.

Georgia Regional Hospital-Savannah

Georgia Regional Hospital/Savannah serves over 2000 people annually and works with people of all ages with a variety of psychiatric diagnoses. We are working towards a recovery-based environment serving to help people reach their highest potential.

Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital-Rome

Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital/Rome is located 65 miles northwest of Atlanta and 64 miles south of Chattanooga. Regional hospitals are part of a regional network of services. Access to hospital care is through community intake and assessment to ensure that people are referred to the hospital only when they need that level of care. Whether it’s a leisurely day spent on our rivers, a golf outing at Stonebridge, a weekend festival or just awalk in the park with a friend, escape the metropolitan rush to Georgia’s Rome.

Southwestern State Hospital-Thomasville

Located in the historic city of Thomasville, Southwestern State Hospital provides services to consumers in need of mental health, developmental disability and addictive disease services in the southwest region of the State of Georgia. Located close to the Florida border and close distance to the gulf coast, Thomasville is home to both the second largest Farmer's Market in the State and three Fortune 500 companies.

West Central Regional State Hospital-Columbus

For 30 years West Central Georgia Regional Hospital/ Columbus has stood as a beacon of hope for consumers in need of mental health, developmental disability and addictive disease services in the west central region of the State of Georgia.
