Applying hints
Carefully read the entire announcement. DHS ads clearly specify the duties/responsibilities/qualifications needed. The more your background and experiences are in line with the announcement - the greater your chances of receiving an interview invitation.
  • Apply early, as we screen and close positions when a suitable pool of viable applicants is generated.
  • Ensure that you apply as directed - e.g. DO NOT add extra characters or improvise in the subject line. Emails are auto routed into the position folder based on the subject line. The recruiter will use that folder to acquire a pool of applicants.
  • Be sure to attach your cover letter and resume to your email in MS Word (.doc). Using other applications (txt, pdf, etc) may delay or prevent consideration
  • Customize your resume to highlight how your background/experience meet the job description/qualifications listed in the announcement. Your resume should be original for the position you are applying for. Cutting/pasting/submitting credentials from other sources (e.g. SPA, Monster, and federal job boards) is strongly discouraged.
  • If you live outside a reasonable commute from the position of interest, it may be helpful if you acknowledge, in your cover letter, that you are relocating to the area, commuting to the position, etc.
  • Do not send personal information - SSN, marital/family status, date of birth, etc or a picture of yourself affixed to the resume
  • Do not send information we did not request (state application, transcripts, DD-214, references, etc).
  • Do not apply for a position that you are not eligible for in hopes you will get matched for something else.
  • Generally speaking a resume is about 2 pages covering the past 10 years. Experiences beyond 10 years rarely have relavance. A resume consisting of more than 2 or 3 pages is very strongly discouraged.
  • While we are able to accept emails from any source, it is recommended that current employees email from their work email (me@dhr.state.ga.us).
  • When using a personal email please be mindful of what it says and the impression it can give an employer (e.g. partyanimal@yahoo.com)
  • Keep a copy of the announcement and the resume you sent
  • Communications is very important. There is a difference between cell phone text/tweet communications and corporate communications. Also your speech (choice of words) and dress/demeanor are always noted and considered.
  • Current DHS employees (Internal) can receive primary consideration for a vacancy provided they meet the listed requirements.
Note: All new employees and re-hires undergo various checks (background, employer reference, criminal check, and education) - without exception! For current/former state government employees these checks include Peoplesoft (looking for those ineligible for rehire - e.g. those with do not hire or dismissal classification) and an indepth discussion with your former supervisor, manager, and/or director.
In addition to a competitive salary & benefits, DHS is part of a statewide initiative called Total Rewards that seeks to attract and retain employees by supplementing their base pay and benefits with programs designed to improve the quality of their work environment and lead to greater job satisfaction and work/life balance. Additional details on your benefits; including accrued leave, sick leave, insurance, credit union, deferred compensation, etc. can be found at: Benefits. State employees are subject to DHS and/or State Personnel Administration rules and practices regarding salary (ie. promotions, demotions, transfers).
